Scan to Citrix with your ScanSnap

Byron K Patrick CPA.CITP MCSE 2003 | June 7, 2010

Everyone loves their little ScanSnaps.  Particularly in the Accounting world… these things are like the next 10 key, you can’t live without them.  However, one of the biggest complaints is that the scanner does not use TWAIN (Technology Without An Interesting Name.)  Which means Citrix doesn’t recognize the scanner when it is locally attached.

Being faced with the fact that most of our clients are using them and they need a simple way to easily move their scans into Citrix, we have developed a tool to do it.  Until now, users would scan to their local computer then manually copy the PDF’s to Citrix.  Yes… “Copy” very few moved!  Which meant potentially sensitive data was being stored on unsecured laptop harddrives!! Unacceptable!

So we created a utility that automatically monitors a folder on the users local harddrive for new PDF’s. Once a user sticks some papers in the scanner and press the button the magic happens. Shortly after scanning is complete (depending on size of scan and speed of internet) the PDF shows up in their Citrix session. The PDF is completely removed from the local computer so there is nothing left behind and everything is now stored securely in Citrix.  We have been rolling this out slowly to our clients and we are now at the point where the process has matured to perfection.  Our latest client began using it without a hitch.

I love a good blog!

Byron K Patrick CPA.CITP MCSE 2003 | May 19, 2010

I just want to give a quick shout out to my friends at CPATechViews. They are consistently addressing great topics and backing them up with good content.  So much so I have to throttle myself from commenting on everything they write…

I would love to see more traffic in the comment section from others.  I have to imagine they are generating a pretty good volume of readers and the content would be that much better to see some conversations brewing in the comment section.  I know every one of you CPA’s out there reading this blog have been to at least 3 sessions about social media, web 2.0, etc, etc.

Lets see you all put what you have learned to good use and step up from being just a reader of good content and start contributing to the conversations.  If you are out there maybe share a link in the comments here to your favorite blog.
